NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- A New Jersey-based pharmaceutical company said it will stop selling the heartburn drug Nexium over-the-counter, following a $200 million settlement to AstraZeneca over the patent infringement.
The company said the deal is the biggest such deal in its history, after the company agreed to a $100 million settlement for Nexium and $100 million for Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, which has lost the exclusive patent protection.
AstraZeneca said in a statement it would not be substituting Teva for Nexium.
"We are in complete agreement with Teva to cease selling and discontinue using the Nexium patent. We will discontinue the use of the Nexium patent as a result of these settlements," AstraZeneca said. "We will continue to work with our U. S. attorneys to fully resolve the patents on Nexium and to resolve the remaining dispute related to the Nexium patent."
The Nexium patent has been scheduled to expire in 2014, but AstraZeneca has not yet made a final decision on the terms.
But Pfizer, the company that invented Nexium, said that it will continue selling it.
"Pfizer will continue to market the drug and will continue to sell it to AstraZeneca for all costs," Pfizer said in a statement.
The company said that it plans to continue selling Nexium and will continue to market it for the full price of $5 a pill.
The AstraZeneca deal will be announced by Pfizer's CEO, Hank McKinnell.
"Our long-term strategy is to be as transparent and as responsive as possible to the new information, and that is the focus of our new strategy," McKinnell said in a statement.
It is not yet clear what other companies will follow, but AstraZeneca said it is "favorable" to Pfizer's move.

comprta el tesótrame.More informationThe British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has launched its new line of medicines, including Nexium, which is expected to lose market exclusivity in the United States in the first half of this year, after a similar product, esomeprazole, failed to meet analyst expectations.
The launch of Nexium, which was previously available in the US, follows the launch of the other acid reflux drug esomeprazole, Protonix, which is expected to lose market exclusivity in the US in the next five years.
Nexium is a prescription-only medicine used to treat frequent heartburn, acid reflux, and esophagitis caused by acid reflux disease, a common condition affecting millions of people in the US. It is also used to treat conditions such as heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease, a digestive disorder caused by excessive stomach acid.
The UK-based company is selling a copy of Nexium for less than a tenth of its cost in the US. The US Food and Drug Administration has not approved a generic version of the drug.
Esomeprazole is the active ingredient in Nexium and is sold under the brand name Protonix. It is also used for the treatment of frequent heartburn, acid reflux, and esophagitis. The drug is available over the counter.
AstraZeneca’s Nexium has been subject to generic competition since 2014, but the product has yet to achieve the same level of safety and efficacy as the generic version, but it is expected to lose market exclusivity in the coming months, according to analysts.
The company is also selling esomeprazole to help patients heal their acid reflux disease. The product is not expected to reach the US market until 2019.
Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company that makes acid-suppressing drugs, has launched two other generic versions of Nexium: Esomeprazole and Prilosec. Each of the three is available over the counter.
Pfizer said that Esomeprazole was the product’s most popular generic, with sales of $5.5bn in 2021, up 1.2% from the previous year.
In January, Pfizer Inc. reported a quarterly profit of $7.5bn, up 1.3% from the previous year.
The company has also sold esomeprazole, its generic version, to a distributor that was set to launch in the US in the next two years.
Pfizer, which makes Nexium, said in a statement that “the launch of Esomeprazole is expected to be a major milestone for the company and will further reduce the uncertainty surrounding its future.”
The US FDA has not approved the company’s Nexium, and the company has yet to respond to the US FDA’s notice.
